Laura and James not only managed to have their wedding at Walthamstow Wetlands, one of my favourite London wedding venues, but also at one I hadn’t heard of before (but has now become a new favourite), MKII, a very cool studio space in Clapton. I always feel that the wedding venue a couple chooses is a great reflection of who they are as people, so I could tell in advance that Laura and James were creative, non-traditional, and partygoers at heart. And so it turned out! Plus from the moment Laura said there were going to be over 20 kids at the wedding, I knew it was gonna be a lot of fun. Kids just seem to make weddings so chaotic, which might be a pain for the parents, but is great for me! They tear parents away from conversations, they run around, they cry, they laugh - they bring so much energy to the imagery, it’s a real joy to capture.
I also seemed to shoot more in my street photography style than usual. Layers continually presented themselves to me, and a lot of funny things seemed to happen as well, which inspired me to go down this route. It’s never a conscious decision, every wedding is different, and you have to adapt and adjust to the mood, the setting, the lighting. Otherwise each wedding gallery just becomes a carbon copy of the previous one, cookie cutter wedding photography if you will, and whilst I’m all about consistency, you need to adapt to each wedding, applying the right toolkit to reflect the mood of the day.
So as you can probably tell, I had a lot of fun photographing this, and I was kinda thankful to only capture the daytime part, I was completely knackered when I left!! #oldmanleven
