Hidden in plain sight just a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street, the Victorian Bath House is a true time capsule. From the outside, you’d never guess what lies beneath - descend the steps and you’re suddenly in a candle-lit, tiled den of opulence, all rich colours, plush furnishings and Eastern-inspired detail. Originally built in 1895, it’s dripping in character and totally unlike anything else in the city. Ideal for couples after something a little more dramatic and decadent, it’s got space for around 150 guests and makes a real statement. Definitely one for lovers of the unexpected. For couples drawn to something a little more theatrical, Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham is a wonderfully unusual choice. Built by Horace Walpole in the 18th century, it’s internationally recognised as one of the finest examples of Georgian Gothic Revival architecture - all white walls, ornate details, sweeping staircases and a slightly fantastical, storybook quality. The Gallery, with its fan-vaulted ceiling and golden canopies, is licensed for civil ceremonies and can hold up to 84 guests, while the gardens and lime grove offer a beautiful spot for drinks and photographs afterwards. It has that rare London combination of feeling both historic and eccentric, grand but intimate, and completely unlike the more predictable hotel or townhouse venues.
