Waltham Forest Town Hall has become a much stronger wedding venue in recent years, thanks to the transformation of Fellowship Square and the range of ceremony rooms now available across the town hall campus. It feels civic and substantial, but also fresh, open and practical - which makes it a great fit for couples who want a London town hall wedding with space, flexibility and a bit of architectural presence.
There are rooms for different sizes and styles of ceremony. The smaller suites work well for intimate weddings, while the Fellowship Civic Chamber is the real statement space, with its upper gallery and capacity for up to 145 people including the couple. It has that classic town hall feeling: formal enough to give the ceremony weight, but not so ornate that it takes over the day.
One of the nicest things about getting married here is the setting around the building. Fellowship Square gives guests somewhere to gather before and after the ceremony, and the fountain, wide open space and strong civic architecture all work well for relaxed photos. It’s also well placed for continuing the celebrations elsewhere in Walthamstow, whether that’s drinks in the village, a reception nearby, or heading on to one of East London’s many characterful venues.
My approach to wedding photography is all about documenting the day naturally, without staging or interrupting things unnecessarily. I’m looking for the real moments - the nerves, the humour, the anticipation, the small interactions between people - and telling the story of the day as it actually felt.
Waltham Forest Town Hall works well for this because the day has a natural flow. Guests arrive into the square, gather outside, make their way into the ceremony room, and then spill back out afterwards into a big open space that gives everyone room to breathe. Those transitions are often where some of the best moments happen.
I’ll be there to quietly photograph it all as it unfolds: the build-up before the ceremony, the glances and reactions during it, the hugs afterwards, and the relaxed portraits and group photos outside. The aim is always to create a set of images that feels honest, full of life, and true to the atmosphere of the day.
Waltham Forest Town Hall has a slightly different feel from some of London’s older, more compact registry offices. It’s bigger, more open, and the experience is less about squeezing everyone onto a narrow set of steps afterwards and more about having space to gather, celebrate and let the day breathe.
The Fellowship Civic Chamber is particularly good for larger ceremonies. The upper gallery gives the room a sense of scale, and the layout makes it feel more like a proper civic occasion. For smaller weddings, the more intimate rooms keep things simple and personal, with some of the spaces featuring William Morris-inspired interiors that nod to the borough’s creative heritage.
After the ceremony, Fellowship Square gives you a useful and photogenic space for confetti, group photos and a few relaxed portraits without needing to rush off immediately. That makes a big difference, especially for couples who want the ceremony part of the day to feel calm and unhurried.
One of the strengths of Waltham Forest Town Hall is its flexibility. You can keep things very simple with a smaller ceremony and drinks afterwards, or use it as the starting point for a much bigger celebration elsewhere in East London.
The surrounding area gives you plenty of options. Walthamstow Village is nearby, with pubs, restaurants and characterful streets, while venues such as God’s Own Junkyard, William Morris Gallery and other East London spaces make it easy to build a day that feels personal rather than formulaic.
It’s not a venue that needs to pretend to be something it isn’t. Its appeal is in the space, the architecture, the practicality and the way it can comfortably handle different kinds of weddings - from small, straightforward ceremonies to much larger town hall celebrations.
