When it comes to your big day you’ll want to capture as many magical moments as possible – but will you opt for first look wedding photos? Traditionally, the bride and groom have seen each otherfor the first time as they meet at the end of the aisle – but this is all beginning to change. In the world of wedding photography, first look photos are slowly becoming the new normal, but what does it mean?
What is a first look wedding photo?
A first look photo captures the profound moment when the couple see each other for the first time on their wedding day. Full of emotion and looks of love, some choose to have the reveal away from their friends and family and keep it between just the two of them. You’ll both be brimming with such an electric combination of nerves, excitement, anticipation, and love that having a chance to experience that moment away from prying eyes may help you relax into the rest of the day. Why do some couples want to do a first look wedding photo?

- Choose a scenic location. Unlike with the aisle reveal, you can choose the location for the first look photography. So, whether you want to capture it with a dramatic outdoor backdrop, in a stunning room or even descending a delicately ornate staircase, it can be lit and dressed with any props you like.
- Radiant lighting. It’s no secret that the British weather can be slightly unpredictable, but if you’re having a wedding later in the year then the daylight can be too. Having the photos earlier in the day means that you can beat dusk.
- More time for cocktails. Not only will you be able to capture more images of just the two of you before the ceremony, but we also won’t need to take as long after the ceremony for photos – which means more time socialising with loved ones and of course, a drink or two (or even three) before the food!
Is a first look photo right for you?
Understandably, a first look photo isn’t for everyone and that’s completely fine – it’s your big day and everything should be as you’ve always dreamed it could be. Some couples choose to keep to walking down the aisle because they want to share it with their guests – it can be particularly meaningful and they want to be part of it too.
There are some logistical considerations too. For example, not only will you need to be up and ready earlier to avoid the day running late (because there’s plenty of rushing around before the ceremony), you might need to factor in additional hair and makeup costs the extra time and touch up just before you go to get married.
Lastly, some brides are worried about their dress getting dirty or marked before everyone else gets a chance to see them. If you’re thinking of going outside for wild and atmospheric first look photos then do bear this in mind as no matter how much care is taken, you can’t plan for everything!
