I was at Hever Castle for Scarlet and Aidan’s wedding recently, and what amazes me is how scenic and unique the outdoor space was. Right from the moment you arrive, it feels like you’re stepping back in time, so I’m not surprised the wedding venue is quite often used in filming for historical dramas!
Scarlet and Adrian were married in the Italian Gardens section of the castle, the highlight being the stunning loggia, which not only has beautiful views onto the 38-acre lake, there’s also a Trevi-inspired fountain to relax around after the ceremony. We were particularly fortunate with the weather, which was perfect for the ice cream they had delivered in, and even feeding the ducks! A favourite past time of Adrian’s, if I remember correctly.
Hever Castle was built in the 13th century, and was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife to Henry VIII. The castle and grounds exchanged hands many times, before sadly falling into disrepair until it was acquired by the American millionaire, William Waldorf Astor, in 1903. With his love for history, he set about restoring the castle to its former glory, as well as improving it with the construction of the Tudor-style Astor Wing, and the beautiful gardens and lake.
