A-K and Aidan’s wedding in Gilmerton House was my second wedding in Scotland within a year, and I’d gladly make it a more regular occurrence if they were all like this.
For starters, the venue was a stunner. Gilmerton House is a Georgian manor house in East Lothian, about half an hour outside of Edinburgh. It’s a grand old building, but incredibly homely as well, with a sumptuous fireplace for warming up on a cold and windy day (which is more often than not north of the border…), and the grounds were something else.
A-K and Aidan were set on an outdoor Quaker-style ceremony in front of a big redwood, the kind you get in the States (where A-K happens to be from). Now if you’re not familiar with Quaker style ceremonies [puts hand up], they’re a really beautiful affair. All the guests are arranged in a circle facing inwards towards the couple who are in the middle. Instead of speeches during the meal, everyone who wants to stand up and say a few words are welcome too, and that continues until there’s a decent amount of silence to suggest everyone has had their say. This was such a lovely moment to be a part of - visually it looked amazing as you’ll see from the pics, but also everyone came out with such heartfelt words, it was hard not to feel the extreme warmth and love in the group.
I am a great believer that the great vibes on a wedding day trickle down from the top, and A-K and Aidan are honestly two of the loveliest people I’ve ever met. I just want an excuse to hang out with them again! I hadn’t had the chance to meet Aidan before the day (not even a video call) but the first thing he did when he saw me was give me a big hug, and passed across an empty hip flask and told me to fill my boots with whatever whiskey was on offer in the designated whiskey corner in the marquee. What a legend.
This was a brilliant day, with so many layers to it, and one I’m thrilled to finally be sharing.
