Nic and Rupert’s wedding at Wilton’s Music Hall was an absolute joy to photograph. There really isn’t anywhere quite like Wilton’s, and with the ceremony taking place on the stage, surrounded by its faded grandeur, balconies and warm lights, the whole thing had this wonderfully theatrical feel from the very beginning. But for all the drama of the setting, it never felt staged or overly formal - it was warm, emotional, funny and full of people having a very, very good time.
Nic works in theatre, so in hindsight it all felt rather inevitable. Wilton’s isn’t just a beautiful backdrop; it felt completely woven into the day. I honestly can’t imagine this particular wedding happening anywhere else.
And then came the piano singalong. I knew there was going to be some music, but I wasn’t quite prepared for what followed! Song sheets came out, inhibitions rapidly disappeared, and before long the entire room was belting out musical numbers with absolutely no holding back. People were singing, laughing, shouting and throwing themselves into it completely.
In 16 years of photographing weddings, I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it. It was joyous, slightly bonkers and completely brilliant - and somehow the perfect ending to a wedding that had started with Nic and Rupert under the stage lights and finished with pretty much everyone in the room becoming part of the show.
