Where to begin?! Has been ages since I last gave an update on my personal work, but things have definitely taken off in the interim. The big news was being named as one of The Phoblographer’s Best Street Photographers of 2019, in their end of year list. I was actually placed at #2 which was a complete shock! Here’s what they had to say:
“Kristian’s work is some of the most refreshing street photography we’ve seen in a while. It blurs the gap between street and social documentary, sitting comfortably within both sub-categories. In particular, we were gripped by his work from his time in Ethiopia. Its vulnerability makes sense as he spoke to us about his initial struggle when arriving in the country. By feeling bad about his perceived privilege, it shows Kristian is able to display empathy – something he pours into his work. He is a wonderful, down-to-earth guy who clearly loves what he does when shooting on the street. We’re looking forward to seeing the work from his next adventure!”
My images from Ethiopia definitely struck a chord, with one in particular featuring in multiple exhibitions, and placing as runner-up in the Best International Street Photograph at the International Street Photography awards, judged by none other than Matt Stuart (Google him if you’re unaware of him! Absolute legend). I was also chuffed to see one of my favourite wedding images make it as finalist at the prestigious Brussels Street Photography Festival.
Right now, with all the restrictions, I can only dream of where to go for my next project, but I’m giving serious thought to doing more voluntary NGO photography work, like I did in Zimbabwe for PhotoAid Global, just before the pandemic hit. Well worth having a look through the post if you haven’t already.
Sensational work. Still takes me a while to get my head round the spades one every time I look at it.
